In any breeding programme, it is important to know the parentage of families and individuals, for a variety of reasons.Our Oil palm breeders make extensive use of family performance, usually selecting the best individual plants within the best families. Such selection will only be effective if families are correctly identified, and are truly families; that is, all individuals have the same parentage. Progeny testing is also used, individual parent palms being evaluated on the basis of the performance of their offspring.

Generations of stringent selection has resulted in highly uniform planting material.
